The Great Black Swamp

Today we explored The Great Black Swamp of Northwest Ohio. One of the compelling questions of the day was, "Why would anyone, in their right mind, want to settle such a difficult piece of land?" What do you think? Remember the soil is extremely fertile here... Do you think that is the reason settlers worked so hard to conquer the land? What is your opinion? After watching the movie, can you imagine Bowling Green full of water and trees? There are no wrong answers to theses questions. Please respond and we will consider the answers in tommorrow's class. Have a super evening and start reading that book! : ) Dorinda

  4. I think that the reason why the people conquered the land is that they were looking for a land for agricultural use and no one was trying to develop this land for the disease.

  7. 1. Would you have liked to have lived here in the home for the mental ill or been here as part of the poor farm?
    No.
    2. Would you have liked to have retired to this government run facility?
    Yes.
    3. Did you realize that the United States had poor farms?
No, I think they had a lot of daily necessities when science and technology did not develop. For example, wash machine, refrigerator, iron, and so on. I think that is an amazing thing.
    4. What did you think of the lunatic house? What was it about the lunatic asylum that made you feel uncomfortable and like not staying and exploring or reading?
The house is very dark; it can lead people to feel horror.
    5. Aside from all of this, what was your favorite part of this field trip?
I love the big house the first floor; there are five pianos, and several instruments. From that, we knew the house owner were much enjoyed their life. That large table is very eye-catching; it reflects the house owner's life is very strict.
    6. What did you learn from this experience?
I saw the American and Indian living in a long time ago, and learned their survival mode and culture. This experience helps me to know more American history.
